Brussels: President Barroso has made the following statement on the earthquake in Chile: "I am deeply shocked at the extent of the devastation that is emerging following the major earthquake in Chile.
My thoughts and condolences go out to the families of the victims of this terrible disaster. We stand ready to do whatever it takes to help the Chilean authorities at this time of need.
As a first step, the European Humanitarian Aid Department (ECHO) of the Commission stands ready to launch a fast-track humanitarian funding decision for "3 million to relieve suffering and meet the immediate needs.
I have asked Commissioner Georgieva to up-date me on a regular basis so that assistance can be mobilised speedily if needed."
